5 Kane Brown Songs That Should Have Been Singles

At only 29 years old, Kane Brown has solidified himself as one of the top acts in country music, selling out arenas around the country and collecting numerous platinum hits across multiple genres. With eight number-one radio hits in six years, here are five others we think could’ve climbed the charts as well.

Here are 5 Kane Brown songs that should have been singles…

  1. “Learning” – Kane Brown

No song in Brown’s catalog tells his story better than the third track on his self-titled debut album, “Learning.” Fans instantly hear the struggles Brown faced early in his life and how by understanding forgiveness and learning how to let things go, he was able to become the brave, successful person he is today. While its subject matter may be too real for radio, its uplifting message is sure to touch listeners and is something everyone can be motivated by.

  1. “Rockstars” – Kane Brown

“Rockstars” is a song that only the day-one Kane Brown fans know, although, it might have been ahead of its time. So many artists and songwriters today build lyrics based on references from other songs, such as Thomas Rhett’s ‘What’s Your Country Song”, which hit number one last year. Based on this trend, “Rockstars” might have had success if pushed to radio. Instead of referencing country artists and songs, Brown name-drops rock bands such as The Rolling Stones, Blink 182, 3 Doors Down, Nirvana, and more.

  1. “Short Skirt Weather” – Experiment

Upon its release, “Short Skirt Weather” was one of Brown’s most traditional country song with its heavy use of banjo and fiddle. Brown has stated before that he wished him and his team put this to radio due to its popularity with the fans, especially during his live shows. In fact, even without it officially becoming a single, stations still played it, allowing it to reach the top 50 on the charts.

  1. “BFE” – Mixtape, Vol. 1

Brown released a short mixtape during the summer of COVID. Unfortunately, mainly because artists were not touring, songs that weren’t singles generally got overlooked. Credit to Brown, he managed to positively promote five of the seven tracks. “Cool Again” and Worship You” went to country radio; “Be Like That” went to pop radio; “Worldwide Beautiful” was a unifying song during the divided time; and “Last Time I Say Sorry” simply featured GRAMMY-winning artist, John Legend. The forgotten track, “BFE,” is an upbeat, fiddle and steel-driven tune about living in the middle of nowhere. Its fun lyrics would have made it a great song for radio.

  1. “Whiskey Sour”— Different Man

“Thank God” is officially the latest single off Brown’s new record, Different Man, but we want “Whiskey Sour” to get the love it deserves. Perhaps too sad for radio, the excellently-written story centers around two young lovers talking about their forever until one day, much to the man’s surprise, she ends the relationship. What was once a drink they often shared together now becomes the liquid pain relief he needs to forget her memory. This song was released in January and is unlikely it will become a single, but it is still one of our favorites on the new album.

Do you agree with our picks? Which Kane Brown songs do you think should have gone to radio?

Who Is Madeline Merlo? The Story Behind Her Journey to Country Music

Who is Madeline Merlo? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about her journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

Quick Facts:

Full Name – Madeline Merlo
Birthday – February 9th
Hometown – Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada
Current City – Nashville, Tennessee
Music Influences – Rascal Flatts, Shania Twain, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Kieth Urban
Label – BBR Music Group
Current project- Slide EP (*as of date of article: 10/31/22)

The Beginning:

There is something exciting about watching Canadian country stars make the move to Nashville to grow and evolve their fanbase. Today, we are highlighting Canadian artist Madeline Merlo and her impressive journey so far.

Growing up in a small town in British Columbia, it was clear from a young age that Merlo was born to be a singer-songwriter. “I grew up in a pretty musical household with all types of genres,” she began. “I listened to a lot of Motown growing up and my mom loved country music, so a lot of Shaina Twain, Dolly, and the older stuff as well as Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, and more.”

At just six years old, Merlo recalls performing on stage for the first time. “I loved singing from a really young age. I performed for the first time at six years old at my kindergarten talent show. I sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from the Wizard of Oz and I remember just feeling this visceral reaction of loving being on stage and wanting to do it more,” she shared.

From that point on, her mom helped her through musical theatre auditions, commercials, singing competitions, and restaurant gigs – wherever she could perform, she did. After attending her first concert at ten years old, Shania Twain, Merlo was even more convinced that country music was her calling. “I am really grateful for that, for having that kind of direction. It wasn’t like a decision sometimes, I think, it was always clear that this is what I was meant to do.”

The Turning Point:

When Merlo turned fifteen, her life started to transform. “I met a songwriter and producer near my hometown, and I started singing demos for him, where I was like ‘what does it look like to write a real song’,” shared the singer. Adding that she finally started writing real songs in high school.

During high school, one of her classmates sent one of her songs, unbeknownst to her, to the local radio station. “It’s a story of a lot of hardworking and tenacity, but certainly luck as well too. There were a lot of God moments sprinkled into my story, especially in the beginning,” began Merlo. “It was within weeks of meeting the radio programmer that I ended up signing a record deal. It was really crazy. I worked with this label called Open Road out of Canada and started putting out music.”

Despite garnering major success in Canada, including Canadian Country awards, playing at every major festival, and charting songs, Merlo had Nashville on her mind. “My heart was really called to be in Nashville, so in 2017, I packed up U-Haul and drove down to Nashville.”

While cutting her teeth in Nashville, Merlo received a message from a casting director, who had reached out to her years prior for a show that was never made. The casting director ended up casting her on Songland. “My manager sent them one song, and they were like ‘Cool, your flight’s tomorrow.’”

She went on to not only win her episode, but Lady A made her song “Champagne Night” their radio single, which eventually spent multiple weeks at number one on the charts. “It blew open so many doors and got me in the room with so many songwriters, and ultimately landed me my record deal with Broken Bow.”

Today:

With a record deal and a supportive team behind her, Merlo has officially begun her rise to country music stardom in the United States. The songstress made her major label debut in September with her EP, Slide. The project features four incredibly well-crafted songs, all co-written by the singer-songwriter.

Each of the four songs shares a different side of Merlo’s one-of-a-kind talent and personality. “For this debut project on this new label and the states, I wanted it to feel diverse and very, very on brand for me and a little tease of what the album looks like,” shared the songstress. The singer admitted that it took a while to truly get the music she wanted, adding that working with Zach Crowell helped her create music that was just right for her project.

When asked about her favorite song, Merlo, understandably, had a hard time choosing. “I love ‘youngish’ so much. I love “Girl Where He Grew Up”, but I think “Slide.” It was the catalyst, it was the first song that Zach and I did together […] When I wrote “Slide” it felt like the first step forward in that direction of where I wanted the project to go.”

Fans can rejoice because Merlo is certainly not done delivering more new music! “We have music locked and loaded ready to go that we’re planning to put out in the New Year.”

Lainey Wilson ‘Bell Bottom Country’ – Album Review

Lainey Wilson’s new album, Bell Bottom Country is out now, October 28th on all streaming platforms. Take a listen and read our full review below.

From the opening chords of “Hillbilly Hippie,” it’s clear that Bell Bottom Country is not your typical modern country album, in the best way possible. There’s twang and soul, rock and revival, creating a unique sound that immediately invites listeners in, letting them know they’re about to experience something special.

ACM New Female Artist of the Year Lainey Wilson has firmly embraced her own style which she describes as “country music with flare.” On her sophomore release, Bell Bottom Country she exemplifies that description. “I’ve lived quite a bit of life the past few years, and I have a lot more to say,” she reveals. “Sure, I love a good pair of bell bottoms, but Bell Bottom Country to me has always been about the flare and what makes someone unique — I have really embraced mine, and I hope y’all can hear that across this project.”

On the rising superstar’s second album, she is exposing her various sides, both lyrically and musically. Here, the Louisiana native is tender yet rowdy, sweet yet gritty, and honest yet vulnerable.

On songs like “Road Runner,” “Atta Girl,” and the previously-released “Heart Like a Truck,” she’s a runner struggling to stay in one place, dealing with the heartbreak that comes with big dreams, proclaiming “I gotta chase the sunrise to keep the tumble in my weed.” Meanwhile, both “Atta Girl” and “Heart Like a Truck” find her down but not out, with a heart that’s a lot stronger than it may seem.

“I got a heart like a truck // It’s been drug through the mud // Runs on dreams and gasoline // And that ole highway holds the key // It’s got a lead foot down when it’s leaving // Lord knows it’s taken a hell of a beating // A little bit of love is all that it’s needing // But it’s good as it is tough // I got a heart like a truck.”

The singer-songwriter embraces a good time on songs like “Hold My Halo,” “Grease,” and “This One’s Gonna Cost Me.” “Grease” is a funky doo-wop-laden jam, while “Hold My Halo” has hints of “Redneck Woman,” mixing driving guitars with a powerful girl-power-infused anthem. Here, Wilson is ready for an evening that would make an angel blush, breaking out the denim, and leaving a little lipstick on a Solo cup. “Gonna tear up this town, like a drunk tornado,” She growls. “Light it up, Tell that angel inside of me to hide her wings and lay low, hold my halo.”

On “Weak-End” she’s dealing with a broken heart, while “Watermelon Moonshine” is a bittersweet ode to young love. While the former is a mournful yet clever take on the drunk dial “Wish that Friday wasn’t just another way to say lonely”), the latter recalls first drinks, first loves, and first times.

“Too young to know what love was // But we were learnin’ on a sweet buzz // There’s never nothin’ like the first time // And mine’s always gonna taste like // Watermelon moonshine”

With “Those Boots (Deddy’s Song),” the thirty-year-old pays homage to her father, who has left big “boots” for a future husband to fill. As of late, the song has become all the more meaningful to the singer, who nearly lost her father earlier this year to a fungal infection that caused him to have a stroke and lose an eye.

Likewise “Me, You, and Jesus,” “Live Off” and “Wildflowers and Wild Horses” find Wilson tipping her cowboy hat to her country life, her faith, and her upbringing. “Wildflowers” is a dusty ode to the way she was raised, proclaiming, “I’m five generations of blazing a trail,” while “Me, You, and Jesus” shows Wilson finding solace with two important men in her life. “When the world comes between us, Y’all don’t give up or give a damn,” She sings on the clever song of love and faith. “You just take me for who I am, We can get through anything, And baby we make one hell of a team, Me, you and Jesus.”

In recent months, there have been multiple female acts (Ashley McBryde, Pillbox Patti, Miranda Lambert) releasing gritty, soulful, and unabashedly country albums, and Lainey Wilson’s Bell Bottom Country is yet another release that proves the best country music might just not be found on the radio.

Who Is Ben Burgess? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Who is Ben Burgess? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about his journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

Quick Facts:

Full Name – Benjamin Beauregard Burgess
Birthdate – 11/6/1984
Hometown – East Dallas, Texas
Current City – Nashville, Tennesee
Musical Influences – Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Ray Charles, Freddy Fender
Label – Big Loud Records
Current Single – “Tears the Size of Texas” (*as of date of article: 10/24/22)

The Beginning:

As always, we love to share rising stars in the industry with our followers; however, today you may recognize this gifted individual already. Ben Burgess started his career as a songwriter, but now he is ready to step into the spotlight as an artist and we have a feeling it’s another move in the right direction for the talented entertainer.

An East Dallas native, music was always Burgess’ path. “My dad was a guitar-playing, songwriting, fireman. I was raised in a firehouse around titans, heroes, and characters larger than life and that shaped the man I am and the kind of songs I write, and how serious I am about writing songs,” began the singer. “My mother was a hippie, still is, and a DJ, when she went to school in Oklahoma, so I grew up around a lot of different music, and I feel like you can hear it in a lot of these songs.”

Burgess credits his family and his Dallas upbringing for his love for music. “The fact that I grew up in the city has really influenced my songwriting and given it to some depth to where I’m not really singing about lifestyle songs, but more about life songs,” shared the singer. Burgess mentions a love for Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra and James Taylor; however, it was Willie Nelson who helped him find a love for country music.

“It was Willie Nelson and it was the Stardust album, [my parents] had the record and they played it all the time, and the cool thing about that album was that he covered other songs, so he was doing like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, all different kinds of music,” shared Burgess. “It really comes down to the guitar and the man or woman and the songs and I feel like country is the perfect genre to do that. And I’m really honored to be in it.”

The Turning Point:

Burgess continued his path toward country music, after a stint in Los Angeles, writing pop music. “I feel like country is kind of a grown-folk thing. We’re talking about heartbreak and there are all kinds of sad stories, and there’s a lot of honesty. […] It’s important for people to connect with each other and realize we ain’t that different at all,” shared the singer.

In 2014, Burgess made the move to Nashville, landing himself a publishing deal shortly after that. “It was blood, sweat, and tears the size of Texas on this journey […] I like to tell people when one door closes, a window opens, you just have to figure out which one it is, even if it ain’t open, find a rock and get in. […] For some reason, I never gave up.” Adding later, “I’m hoping I can inspire the next generation of songwriters, country superstars like Morgan and Ernest, Tyler Rich to keep going.”

As a songwriter, Burgess has written songs for artists like Morgan Wallen, Florida Georgia Line, and The Cadillac Three. After finding success as a songwriter with a lot of Big Loud Records’ artists, it was no surprise that the singer would make his artist debut as a Big Loud recording artist.

Today:

Burgess made his artist debut with his brand new record Tears the Size of Texas. “We tried to get as many honest songs as we could for this album,” began the rising artist. “The process with me and Joey Moi, the producer, was really us going back and forth for months listening to the songs and going, ‘What’s the message? What’s the honesty here?’ And also trying to find a common theme that we can balance from.”

Burgess’ ten-song project has everything any country music lover could want. “I think we really found a good balance of some grit, some truth, and some badassness, and some sensitiveness. There’s some introspective on there and I think there’s a strength in being able to take a loss, and strength in talking about it and singing about it.” Some standouts on the record include the introspective solo write about grief, “Ain’t Got No Phone,” “Jackson,” and “Kill A Man.”

Thankfully this is just the beginning for Burgess. He plans to continue to release more and more music, as long as Big Loud will let him. As a songwriter, he has music for days, so it’s only a matter of time until he expands his already impressive artist catalog.

If you are dying to catch Burgess live, he is heading back out with Koe Wetzel (and Jelly Roll) next month. New York fans can catch him later this week, October 27th with Warren Zeiders. We anticipate hearing him jump on a major tour next year too! For tickets and more tour information, check-out his website here.

HunterGirl Makes Major Label Debut with “Hometown Out Of Me”

HunterGirl’s debut song, “Hometown Out Of Me” is out now, October 21st, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand-new track below.

After winning the heart of America on American Idol, HunterGirl is ready to make her label debut. While many new artists choose to release radio-ready, ‘safe’ songs, HunterGirl is choosing to use her newfound spotlight to thank her hometown. Her new song “Hometown Out Of Me” is everything you want it to be.

“My hometown has supported my dream since I was little and especially through this crazy year of my life. I wanted my first single following the show to be a thank you card to my hometown. The reason I get to chase my dream is because of the amazing people who have supported me. No matter where this journey takes me, I will never forget where I came from,” shared the singer-songwriter in a recent press release.

Although personal and truthful to HunterGirl, “Hometown Out Of Me” is a story anyone can relate to. It is all about knowing where you come from and remembering the people who have supported you all along on your journey, no matter where it led you.

“I’m never gonna not think heaven’s at the end of daddy’s little gravel road // I’m never gonna not be the same old same me everybody back there knows // An apple’s still an apple when it’s nowhere near the tree // You can take me out of my hometown but you can’t take my hometown out of me // Maybe you ain’t scared of crashing // When you’ve got a place to land  // You can hear it in my accent // That somebody gave a damn”

This is just the beginning for HunterGirl. We look forward to seeing where she lands next!

As soon as the song starts, you are met with an incredible harmony, something Track45 is known for. The beautiful way their voices work together is both astonishing and breathtaking. “Family” is a heartfelt song about friends that become family and small-town values that are embedded into every relationship.

“I don’t got friends, I got family // At the end of the day that’s all I need // and you know, it’s what you’ll always be, no matter how long it’s been // No, I don’t got friends // You might have a different mama than me, you might of grown up in some different state lines // You might root for different home team // But I ain’t never wonder if you’re on my side // So let’s make a toast to the good stuff”

“Family” is an endearing song about your chosen family. Anyone can relate to it! Track45 does an amazing job drawing the listener in, while we all hang on to their every word. This may be our favorite release from them thus far!
