Rising country artist and one of our New York Country Swag 2018 Artists to Watch, Jordan Davis released his debut full-length album today.  Home State, available everywhere, comes following Davis’ biggest week yet. During his Whiskey and White Wine show Wednesday night at Nashville’s Exit/In, the newcomer was presented with his very first certified gold record for his breakthrough single, “Singles You Up”.  His very first headlining tour wrapped last night (Thurs, Mar. 22) and now Davis starts his album release week.

All twelve tracks on the album were co-written by Davis, allowing fans to peek into his personal story and his pride for his hometown of Shreveport, Louisana. Country radio was first introduced to the Lousiana native when he released “Singles You Up” which is now sitting in the top 10 on the country charts.  The music video released earlier this year has already garnered over six million views and was the perfect single to kick off his debut LP.

Besides the playful “Singles You Up” and “Take it From Me” Davis does an outstanding job of blending sub-genres of the country music world including pop, rock and even r&b.  The project features heartbreaking ballads, “Leaving New Orleans”, “Dreamed You Did”, and “Going ‘Round” as well as sensual, love songs such as “Selfish”, “Slow Dancing in a Parking Lot” and “Sundowners”.

Standouts on the LP are “Tough to Tie Down” which expresses a woman who is wild and free but despite her always leaving, he will love her “as long as this world keeps spinning ’round.”  “Made That Way”, another love song highlighting taking someone as they are, quirks and all. “You’re Christmas lights in August / won’t wake up ’til 10 am / my heart pounds just like a kick drum any time that you walk in.”

Fans of John Mayer, Drake White, Sam Hunt and Thomas Rhett will all find something to absolutely love and appreciate on Home State.  Grab your copy on iTunes here or take a listen below.

Ellen DeGeneres Surprises Devin Dawson

Devin Dawson made his Ellen debut today, performing his debut single “All on Me” from his album Dark Horse. Wearing his signature all black, Dawson and his band performed the track which is currently sitting at number 3 on the Country Airplay Chart.

After the performance, Ellen DeGeneres joined Dawson on stage and after exclaiming that each member of the audience would be getting a copy of his album, she said: “I have a surprise for you, this is a really, really great song…it’s so good that it’s gone gold.” Dawson clearly shocked, started jumping up and down with excitement as his very first RIAA gold-certified plaque was presented to him.  Watch the full video above.

Scotty McCreery Makes Career Comeback With “Five More Minutes”…

Everybody loves a good comeback story and Scotty McCreery‘s is no different. Back in 2011, it seemed as though the young country singer was sitting on top of the world. He had just won American Idol, signed to UMG Nashville, and made history as both the first country artist and the youngest male artist of any genre to debut his first studio album, Clear as Day, at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.

Fast Forward to a few years later, after releasing his sophomore album, See You Tonight, which garnered his first Top 10, and just before beginning the song writing process for his third record, McCreery was dropped from his label. With legal issues interfering, McCreery found himself unable to release new music for his fans. Despite the major upset in his career, McCreery never stopped pursuing his dream and continued to write. It was during that timeframe that he penned the song that would soon change his life, “Five More Minutes.”

After independently releasing the hit track, which pays tribute to his late grandfather, McCreery became the first country artist to have a charting single without the support of a label. Following the release, McCreery signed with Triple Tigers who hyper-focused on the song, pushing it all the way to the top spot, making “Five More Minutes” both McCreery’s personal favorite song and his first Number 1 hit.

“Five More Minutes” serves as the debut track from McCreery’s first album in five years, Seasons Change, available everywhere now. To celebrate the highly anticipated album, McCreery took to New York City for a special Album Release Show at Gramercy Theatre.

Prior to his performance, McCreery joined label reps, media, and industry professionals for a pre-show hang, showing his gratitude for the support of the new album and taking the time to individually speak to all of the guests in the room. It was during that time that McCreery was surprised with a gold record for his first number one song.

The McCreery Army was strong, showing up in droves on a cold Monday evening and singing back every word to the country star during his 90-minute set. The high-energy performance featured tracks off McCreery’s new album including the title track along with crowd favorites, “This Is It” and “In Between”. Throwing in songs from his debut and sophomore albums like, “I Love You This Big” and “Feel Good Summer Song”, McCreery had the packed crowd on their feet and bopping along song after song.

Magic took over the room when McCreery slowed things down to perform “Five More Minutes”. As he led into the chorus, fans took over the vocals, singing every word while McCreery held both hands to his chest showing true gratitude and acknowledgement to the impact this very special song has made on both him and his fans.

Paying homage to traditional country music, McCreery impressed with a medley of covers including Alan Jackson’s “Chattahochee” and John Michael Montgomery’s “Sold”, before finishing the show in an encore led by his first platinum single, “See You Tonight.”

The Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series at Opry City Stage

Opry

Friday night The Studio at Opry City Stage hosted its very first Bluebird Cafe Songwriter Series, an event that mimics Nashville’s iconic intimate venue.  Bringing a little taste of a songwriter round to the heart of Times Square, writers JT Harding, Nicolle Gaylon and Chris Destafano took the stage for back to back shows. This “in the round” style performance gives a chance for the songwriters of our favorite songs to sit and explain the writing process to the audience.

The intimate setting of The Studio which seats just under 200 was packed with fans of country music.  There was a quiet excitement buzz in the room as the wait staff took everyone’s food and drink order before the show started.

The writers took the stage and took turns singing songs that they had written for artists in the genre.  JT Harding sang “Different For Girls” a song that was cut by Dierks Bentley and Elle King, then during his next round explained his affinity for sad songs.  “I write a lot of slow songs. It’s a hard lesson to learn in life, as simple as it sounds, but as far as I can tell you can’t make somebody love you, you can only stalk them and hope for the best,” he laughed. “When that doesn’t work, we write songs” he explained as he started Kenny Chesney’s monster hit “Somewhere With You”.

Nicolle Galyon who has had a multitude of hits picked by some of her favorites to perform for the audience including “Automatic” a song she penned with Miranda Lambert just three weeks after giving birth to her daughter and “We Were Us” another Miranda Lambert song that she duets with Keith Urban.  She told the story about her very first time on a plane, her and her mother went to Fan Fair (CMA Fest) in Nashville and she waited in line to get Kenny Chesney’s autograph. Twenty years later, Galyon had a number one hit with Chesney with “All the Pretty Girls”.  “If you stalk country music long enough good things might happen,” she laughed before playing a slowed down version of the song.  She ended her set of songs with two of her radio singles climbing the charts, Lee Brice’s “Boy” and Keith Urban’s “Female” which is nominated for Song of the Year at next month’s ACM Awards.

Last in the lineup, Chris DeStafano kicked off his set of songs with his recent cut collaboration by Carrie Underwood and Ludacris called “Champion”.  “It’s the most special thing in the world as a songwriter to see how the song is affecting and inspiring so many people,” he said.  He also performed “From the Ground Up”, cut by Dan + Shay, an upbeat version of  Luke Bryan’s “Kick the Dust Up” that had the audience clapping along. He ended the night with an emotionally driven version of Carrie Underwood’s “Something in the Water”.

Overall the night was a resounding success, proving that New Yorkers love to feel like they have escaped from the hustle and bustle of the city and are in Nashville even if it is for only a few hours. Head to www.oprycitystage.com for information and tickets for the next songwriter series happening this Friday, March 30th.

Walker Hayes Re-Releases 8Tracks Vol. 1 & 2 Digitally

Walker Hayes

We last caught up with Walker Hayes at his NYC album release show at American Beauty, back in October.  Now, the rising country star has decided to give back to his fans the music that made them first fall in love with his unique take on country music. Originally released almost two years ago in Summer of 2016, Hayes has re-released 16 tracks, some of which did not make his full-length album Boom.

Without a record deal, Hayes recorded these work tapes and released them on his website for free, garnering thousands of new fans. The music caught the eye of Monument Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment,  which offered him a record deal back in January of 2017.  Boom was released in October of last year as well.

“I have been so fortunate to get to do things in a unique way this time around. My team has let me take risks and create music that is authentic to me – even though it might not sound like anything else,” says Hayes in a recent press release. “Today, we’re putting out the music that got me here. I’ll never forget the way fans’ reactions made me feel when I first put these 8Tracks out. They are homemade and they are the foundation of who I am. This is my way of saying ‘thanks’ for everyone’s support. I hope old fans are excited to hear them again and I hope new fans love them just as much.”

Take a listen to Vol. 1 here and Vol. 2 here.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: SaraBeth

SaraBeth

Photo via SaraBeth Facebook

Garland, Texas hometown of Lee Ann Rimes and our next Swag Spotlight, SaraBeth.  “Growing up she was what every singer in town aspired to be, if she could do it you could do it too,” SaraBeth explains of Rimes in a recent chat about growing up in Garland.  As a shy kid who sang in her church choir, Sara was in elementary school when she started performing at the Garland Opry. As she grew up she explains that her biggest influences were definitely Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks. As her tastes matured, she found a true love for traditional country music such as Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline.  Her parents listened to light rock and Christian music, so those genres also shaped her influences today.  Originally going to Baylor and pursuing entrepreneurship, SaraBeth realized after graduating that she truly loved singing and did not want to look back and wonder “what if”.  She headed to Nashville to pursue her music career and hasn’t looked back since.

Releasing music as a solo artist since 2012, but realizing that it was always a group effort, she is now switching gears and working with two others to make up the SaraBeth trio.  Glenn Mitchell and Vicky Vaughn play and lend their voices to her latest single, “Something About It”. “I’ve never been more excited about a chapter in my music career, mainly because of all of the people I am working with and the music itself,” she tells us. “I was just SaraBeth but I’ve never played my own instruments, I was singing and writing the songs but I wasn’t writing them alone, I wrote a lot with my guitar player Glenn, who is now in the trio, so I was always sort of part of a group”  Working with a new producer who has also worked with some heavy hitters like Dixie Chicks, Big and Rich, Lady Antebellum, Sara Evans, The Band Perry and Martina McBride, SaraBeth describes Paul Worley as “the most wonderful person to collaborate with”.

The SaraBeth Trio is heading to New York this week. SaraBeth is running a half marathon, something she started getting into a few years back. “I woke up in 2011 on New Years Day and said this year I am running a half marathon,” she explains.  Since then she has run four full marathons and a bunch of half marathons and is looking forward to Sunday, running with her aunt and uncle who reside in NYC. We talked about how training for running long distances and the actual race is a lot like the music industry. “It is one of those things that is a lot about persistence and it is about doing things you don’t want to do. If the weather isn’t right or in the music industry people tell you that they don’t like this song or you don’t fit this mold, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do it, it just means you have to keep training and pushing yourself and eventually you’ll break through,” she explains.

After the marathon, the trio headed to meet up with New York Country Swag on early Tuesday (Mar. 20) for a LIVE Swag Session in the video above.  Looking ahead to the rest of the year, they are excited to get into the studio in the next few months to record some new music. They have a bunch of tour dates scheduled overseas in the fall, something SaraBeth says she can’t wait to get back there to perform. “They obviously do like to have the party scene from the country artists, but they are an amazing audience to just be quiet and listen, they soak up every word you say,” she says of the experiences she’s had there. For a full list of dates and more info check out www.sarabethmusic.com and be sure to follow along on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
