NYCS First Impression: Ryan Hurd ‘Platonic’

Ryan Hurd Platonic

Acclaimed Nashville songwriter, Ryan Hurd, settles into his own style on his new EP, Platonic. No stranger to the limelight, the country artist has written hit songs for everyone from Jake Owen and Dierks Bentley to Florida Georgia Line and Rascal Flatts. Yet, where he really shines is with his own brand of romantic storytelling immersed in hooky melodies.

In 2018, he released an emotional ode to his wife (country superstar Maren Morris) with the single, “Diamonds and Twine” to a smattering a success. The track positioned the artist as more than just a songwriter, but a musician in his own rite. On Platonic, he settles effortlessly into the sound that fans have come to expect, with a renewed focus on the power of storytelling.

If there’s one thing that the “To a T” songwriter does well, is bring a touch of summer sunshine to any track he writes. That’s never more apparent than on “Half Hoping.” Bursting with radiant energy, the regretful breakup song sizzles with the kind of melody you hope never ends — sort of like summer itself. “I’m wishing you would stay / wishing you’d come over /you’re the angel and the devil talking on my shoulder / wishing I’d forget you / but happy I remember / baby, wishing I could pick a side but I’m right in the center”

Title track, “Platonic,” is one of those slow burn romantic stories people write novels (and music) about. Hurd languishes in his usual style, where he paints such a clear picture with his lyrics you can almost see it playing out in front of you. A mid-tempo shuffle that begs for a couples dance, this is a song that’s bound to climb it’s way up the charts and into our hearts.

If ever there was a song that brought you back to your first love, it’s “Florida With A Girl.” The laid back ballad taps into the dizzying anticipation of falling in love for the first time. It captures the moment when you step boldly into adulthood and wrangle with feelings, unlike any you’ve ever felt. From the gentle lull of the melody to the hushed vocals, the songwriter transports us to that place in time. “It was warm cheap beer chasing first kiss fear when the sun goes down / it wasn’t just one week / wasn’t just some beach in a spring break town / it was Florida with a girl”

The final track will break your heart for all the right reasons. A dreamer’s oasis wrapped in a melody, it reflects on how more love in the world would do us all some good. Acoustic guitar mingles with Hurds honied vocals, building a warmth that infuses the meaning of the song into the arrangement itself. On the track, Hurd shares one final line that stands out as a motto we could all live our lives by: “If I could make a wish for the world there would be more music / whenever you got lonely you could always find a friend”

Check out our interview with siner-songwriter from earlier this summer when we caught up with him at Taste of Country Music Festival.

The Nashville rising star knows a thing or two about writing great songs, but with his newest EP, he taps into the format that serves him best. Positive vibes and feel good charisma pack the melody-fueled EP — making Platonic a must listen. To keep up with Ryan Hurd follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Platonic is now available everywhere you stream or buy music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist.

NYCS First Impression: Riley Green ‘Different Round Here’

Riley Green Different Round Here

Alabama native and one of our favorite rising artists, Riley Green finally released his debut record entitled Different ‘Round Here. The fourteen-track record is full of songs for both the traditional and modern-day country lover. It encompasses eight of the songs off his renowned EP’s In a Truck Right Now and Get That Man a Beer EP. The new record is laced with old-school country influences and themes of heartbreak, love, and pride in small-town upbringing. Green continues to prove why we named him one of our 2019 Artists to Watch.

As it should, the album begins with “There Was This Girl,” which was the song that seemingly started it all for Green. The track was both his first radio single and his first number one song, and the buzz surrounding the track quickly catapulted Green into the limelight. Check out our Swag Session with him, where he sang the song as it was climbing the charts, along with, “In A Truck Right Now,” a heartfelt ballad off the record.

The album also features “Same Old Song” and “Break Up More Often.” The former is an upbeat bop, while the latter is a romantic ode to the trials people face in a relationship. Green lays it on thick for the girl he loves, expressing the charming and cheeky sentiment “If tellin’ each other goodbye is gonna lead to a long slow kiss / If you tearin’ out of my drive is gonna get us makin’ love like this / It’s crazy to think that yesterday we weren’t even talkin’ / if this is how it’s gonna be / then baby maybe we should break up more often.”

Green continues to melt hearts with his true blue country twang and swoon-worthy vocals in “My First Everything” and “Hard To Leave.” The first is a slightly melancholy, yet nostalgic tune. The singer reminisces about that “that first loving feeling.” He laments about the feelings that only apply to your first love. He lets fans into the inner workings of his heart on this track. “You were my first love / My first broken heart / That’s all you were to me / Just my first everything.”

In “Hard To Leave,” Green’s vocals are accompanied by a soft musical arrangement. While still keeping his manly man edge, the singer admits to not wanting to leave his girl after a great time together. Calling it a “tough love song,” the singer-songwriter shines a light on the special moments of experiencing love, without actually mentioning the word. “Girl you make it hard to leave / You got some kind of hold on me / You drive me wild / Giving me that smile.”

The rising artist continues to emote in “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” and “Numbers On The Cars.” Both pre-released tracks pay homage to Green’s late grandfathers. The first garnered approval by fans even before its release. It’s a staple at his live shows and Green’s current radio single. The latter is a more direct appreciation song for both of his grandfathers. He tackles the difficult subject of Alzheimer’s disease and how it changes your relationship with your loved ones. Green’s vulnerability and authenticity are obvious in both of these impactful tracks.

For fans, who love Green’s honesty, the singer included two songs that personify pride in his upbringing. Both the title track and “Outlaws Like Us” remind fans that the rising artist will always be a good ole’ country boy at heart. In both songs, the singer shows his appreciation for the American flag and his “one-stoplight town.” Although clearly personal, both the songs tug at your heartstrings and also make you cherish your own upbringing, regardless of how similar or different it may have been.

Continuing the theme of honesty, Green shows off his unique perspective on break-ups in “In Love By Now,” “Runnin’ With An Angel,” and “Get That Man A Beer.” The first track tells the story of a guy admitting that he probably blew his chance with a girl that has it all together and knows her worth, while “Runnin’ With An Angel” appears to be a song about the singer’s muse. He compares himself to the devil and her to an angel, while admitting that he tried everything to get over her. Finally, he comes to the realization that she’s too good for him.

In “Get That Man A Beer,” Green ironically sides with his ex’s ex-boyfriend. Relating to what the man went through post-break-up, “she did what she did to me to him,” he empathizes by encouraging others to buy the guy a drink.

Regardless of whatever side of Green you relate to the most, he’s got that undeniable ‘it factor’ and one of a kind talent. According to the rising artist, “Whether you’re writing or singing country music, the best thing you can be is different. And I want to have a sound that is unique.” He goes on to add:  “For me to say, ‘We do things different round here’ was a good way to present not only my first record, but me. I do things different and the fans allow me to do that. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

In this case, Green nails it. He created a record that is undoubtedly unique, yet has that familiarity, where listeners will want to listen again and again. We can’t wait to see his career take off! Find tickets to his first-ever headlining tour here.

Jon Pardi Chats About His Upcoming Project & Album Release Show in NYC

Jon Pardi

Last week we spoke with Jon Pardi about all of the exciting things he has coming up including his third studio album, Heartache Medication, and his album release show that will take place at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. For a chance to win tickets to the show, + meet and greets, and a copy of the album, use the form below then head to Facebook for additional opportunities.

Pardi explains that he is currently on the road on his “rolling pirate ship”. As he gears up for his next project to be released, the songwriter/ artist tells us that this record is “a little more rootsy”.  He explains “It’s more there are a lot of influences where I grew up on listening to Brooks and Dunn, Dwight Yoakam, George Strait, Mark Chestnutt, all kinds of sounds on there, that’s all blended together to where it’s me, it’s brand new sounding but it’s got a little remembrance of a different time.”

Photo by Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag

Pardi has released four songs so far from the upcoming project and along with the title track, each is cleverly written, giving traditional country fans and modern country fans alike something to fall in love with. By bringing back the classic country instruments like a fiddle, and steel guitar, the twang is palpable while the lyrics are relatable to the current day. One of the songs we are most excited about was written by Eric Church, Miranda Lambert along with Michael Heeney and Luke Laird and features Lauren Alaina. “Don’t Blame the Whiskey” was written around the same time as “Drink In My Hand”, and Pardi recalls hearing it years ago and always loving it. “I knew me and Lauren sang great together, we hosted the ACM Honors together and we sang a lot,” he says of the decision to add a female voice. “She’s got a really soulful voice on this track, she can belt it, Lauren Alaina’s got some vocal pipes but it’s a little softer and it’s really pretty”.

Heartache Medication will be drop on Friday, September 27th and on that night, Pardi will celebrate by performing at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City with special guest, Tyler Rich.  “This is my time, I can not wait to release the album in New York City, I love the city, the fans are awesome, this record fits the fans,” Pardi says. “A lot of people ask why I’m doing the album release in NYC but all the fans want to do is have a good time, I feel like my music resembles a good time”.

He understands that the vibe in the Big Apple is something completely unique and the pride people have about living there is always evident. “I try to tell people when the rednecks question it, I tell people, Garth did it back in the ’90s and he had a million people at Central Park so, there is obviously a country crowd there.”

Photo by Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag

After his show at Hammerstein Ballroom, Pardi will set out on his Heartache Medication tour with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Although he loved his direct support position on Dierks Bentley’s ‘Burning Man Tour’ he looks forward to getting more up close and personal with fans on this intimate tour.

To keep up with Jon Pardi follow him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Midland Kick Off Their ‘Let It Roll’ Tour in New York City

MIdland

Last night, the honky-tonking Texas trio Midland kicked off the first show of their Let It Roll Tour to a packed house at Terminal 5 in New York City. The group has been on a roll themselves as of late, with their critically-acclaimed sophomore album scoring No. 1 on the Billboard charts in the first week of release, a headlining tour, and two CMA Award nominations for Vocal Group of the Year as well as New Artist of the Year.

The soulful, straight-shooter Desure took the stage prior to Midland to get the crowd ready for some toe-tapping, two-stepping country music. Through honest storytelling and an outlaw vibe, Desure proved why Rolling Stone has named him one of country’s “Top 10 Artists You Need to Know.”

The energy level was especially high when the boys of Midland lead vocalist Mark Wystrach, lead guitarist Jess Carson, and bass player Cameron Duddy walked on stage. Their opening song “Playboys,” was exactly what the crowd anticipated, a fun-filled song with an eclectic play on words showcasing what Midland is known for. Their smooth vocals shined during their second song as they sang “Let It Roll,” the title track off of their latest album. Everyone’s hands were in the air clapping along to the catchy “21st Century Honky Tonk American Band.”

Midland slowed things down a bit with their groovy track “Cheatin’ Songs” before singing the fan-favorite, and latest single “Mr. Lonely.” The crowd was loving every minute of the toe-tapping song about the “guy who all the girls are talking about.” They followed up their current hit with the sentimental “I Love You, Goodbye” displaying their soft yet strong vocals.

As Wystrach introduced the next song, he spoke about young love and big dreams growing up, and said “This song encompasses what it felt like in those days when life was a little bit more simple, and chasing those simple times,” and they sang the nostalgic “Fast Hearts and Slow Towns” displaying the trio’s incredible harmonies.

Midland Setlist

It is evident Midland’s music is as personal as you can get. After singing “Cheatin’ By the Rules,” and “Every Song’s A Drinkin’ Song,” they paused and took a moment to survey the crowd and explain the feeling in the room. Upon reflecting, Wystrach said, “I see it all around, it’s that L, it’s that O, it’s that V, it’s that E. It is the greatest thing in the world, it is the one thing that this country is poor on right now.” They urged us all to “bring a little bit more love into your world, to “take a breath, have some patience, and spread it, because I promise you we are all better when there is more L.O.V.E. baby! “That is the only reason we do this, y’all feel the love tonight New York City?” The roar of agreement from the crowd set the stage for their hit song “Make A Little.” Following a lesson on love, the band sang “Put the Hurt on Me”, “Roll Away,” and “Somewhere On The Wind.”

At one point in the night, Midland requested the house lights to be turned on for a special toast to the New York City crowd for setting the bar high. In celebration of the first night of the tour, Wystrach graciously said, “Cheers, you guys. Thank you, this is beautiful. I love looking out at this crowd, I see people from every corner of this world and that’s what Midland is all about. We’re about the love, we’re about the music and bringing people together, thank you guys for coming to our show.”

Midland-Setlist-Let It Roll

The trio’s encore began with the song that put the band on the map, the classic hit, “Drinkin’ Problem,” and continued with “Lost in the Night,” and “Gator Boys,” before closing the show out with “Gettin’ the Feel” and “Fourteen Gears.” By the roar of the crowd, no one wanted the night to end. There is no doubt Midland is invigorating and unique yet sticking to their own traditional country roots and are destined for continued success and accolades. Midland’s Let It Roll tour is scheduled throughout the remainder of the year and is making stops in their home state of Texas, Colorado, and even Hawaii. Reasons You Don’t Have to Love Country Music to Love Our Sails

If you’ve been following along, NYCountry Swag and Manhattan By Sail have teamed up for 4 events before the cold weather sets in. Our first country edition sail was on August 9th and featured Rob Bellamy and our second was on September 14th featuring Carter Winter.  With two more events coming up, we wanted to let you in on a little secret, you do not have to love country music to absolutely love these sails. Here are some reasons why:

Sail

The Views

Even if you are a native New Yorker, even if you have grown up right in the middle of the city, our Manhattan By Sail collaboration gives you a chance to see the beautiful skyline, get up close and personal with Lady Liberty and see the city from a different perspective. If you are immersed in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, you take for granted how stunning it looks at night and when calmly floating around the New York Harbor, you have the opportunity to take it all in.

Sail

It’s The Perfect Pregame

Each of our events take place on either Friday or Saturday nights and are early enough in the night to make it your pregame stop before heading out in the big city. Each ticket includes an open bar for beer and wine for the entirety of the sail as well as a cash bar for other drink options. If you are looking for a place to go after we party on the boat, we offer a free drink ticket at The Boogie Room which is a great bar located inside the Mondrian Park Avenue hotel that plays great music from the 80s and 90s.

Carter Winter

Hearing Great Music

Yes, we are NYCountry Swag and we do have country music singer-songwriters and artists as our musical guests, however, part of our sail is just fun, great music. Each of our featured artists play classic covers, songs from all different genres and eras that you will for sure know and love, even if you aren’t a country music fan. In between sets, we blast our playlist of fun tunes and dancing is certainly encouraged.

Country Sail

Something Different To Do

Whether it’s a date night with your spouse, moms-night-out or just grabbing your friends, our Country Edition Sail is a damn good time. What is better than an ocean breeze, a beautiful backdrop and a cold drink? We can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday or Saturday night.

Our next event takes place on September 27th and we are featuring Baker Grissom, a songwriter and artist that caught us off guard with his incredible debut EP, Saturdays and Sunday. We have a strong feeling that in just a few years, you will be proud to tell your friends that you saw and got to meet Baker before he was a big star.

Our final event of the season will be on October 11th and we have Kalie Shorr performing. Kalie is energetic and her original songs will definitely make you fall in love with her. She is set to release her debut album next week and is excited to perform in New York City music fans.

What We’re Listening To: September Picks

NYCountry Swag’s “What We’re Listening To” playlist highlights the wide range of our team’s favorite songs and artists when it comes to the country music genre.  At the end of the day, we are all fans first with a passion for country music and are eager to share with you all what we’ve got on repeat each month.

Find below each of our team member’s favorite songs and why in our September picks. Then be sure to give our Spotify account a follow and listen to our favorite tracks!

SEPTEMBER PICKS:

Stephanie Wagner, Founder

Pick: “She’s Mine” – Kip Moore
Songwriters: Dan Couch, Kip Moore, Scott Stepakoff

“This month, I’m listening to Kip Moore’s latest release “She’s Mine”. In typical Kip Moore fashion, the song is a bop paired with meaningful lyrics. On first impression, the title of the song may lead you to believe that it’s just another country love song, but upon further listening, Moore lays out the idea of searching for that love and questioning the endless possibilities of where she might be. I love that so many ideas and questions are asked in this song, suggesting that love could literally be anywhere.”

Christina Bosch, Managing Editor

Pick: “Bluebird” – Miranda Lambert
Songwriters: Luke Dick, Miranda Lambert, Natalie Hemby

Miranda Lambert has already released several songs that will be on her new record, Wildcard which is out later this fall and while I have truly loved each of them, “Bluebird” is definitely a favorite and a song I’ve had on repeat this month. Sonically, the song is sweet, simple and an easy listen but it’s the lyrics that are relatable while also being specific to Lambert’s current journey.

“Yeah, I’m a keeper / I keep digging down for the deep / Like the records I’m playing, they might keep you waiting / But you know I’m gonna play em for keeps”

The line above specifically spoke to me, I always gravitate towards meaningful lyrics, songs that move you and make you think. Lambert has always had a way with words, especially when she teams up with hit writers like Luke Dick and Natalie Hemby. I am so looking forward to the rest of the Wildcard album to see what else the songstress has up her sleeve.

Dylan Bestler, Contributing Writer

Pick: “He Went To Jared” – HARDY & Morgan Wallen
Songwriters: Michael Hardy, Morgan Wallen, Chase McGill

“There’s nothing better than a fun, upbeat, breakup song and in my opinion and this track fits that category perfectly; it’s a straight-up banger. HARDY and Wallen share their stories about how their rough, southern, blue-collar lifestyle wasn’t enough for their girls as they lost them to rich, classy, clean cut guys.

“He went to Ole Miss, I went to work / He pushes paper, I push the dirt / He’s got that clean cut, drivin’ him a clean truck / I’m just sittin’ here with a beer and my jeans tucked”

I love how good of friends Morgan Wallen and HARDY are. Their friendship and similar music styles make them a great duo for songwriting and performing. These guys have already topped the charts as either artists or songwriters and will continue to do so for a long time. “

Julia Grubbs, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Front Porch” – Joy Williams
Songwriters: Emily Shackleton, Joy Williams, Lize Rose

“I don’t have much time to just relax around the house, but when I do, Country Coffeehouse is one of my favorite Spotify playlists to throw on, especially in the beginnings of fall. More of an indie-country sound, these songs create the perfect mood for the incoming chill. I love this relaxing song by Joy Williams, with the peaceful violin, wringing vocals, and the rhythmic guitar to settle me in and slow down from the craziness of New York City. She talks about coming home, back to where you’re welcomed, no matter what has happened.”

“If never you find what you’re looking for/ Come on back to the front porch / Say my name through the screen door…Whatever you’ve done, it doesn’t matter / ‘Cause darling we’re all a little splintered and battered”

Autumn Haile, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Weeping Willow” – Ruston Kelly
Songwriters: A.P Carter

“As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother, who was raised in the desolate landscape of Alabama back in the 1950s. Growing up alongside her, I was exposed to old-school country music like Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and The Carter Family. So, when Ruston Kelly, one of my favorite modern-day country artists, covered the heartbreaking “Weeping Willow,” originally made famous by The Carter Family, it made my entire summer. This somber track about pining for unrequited love is grounded in modern production while tipping its hat eloquently to the creators of the past. Ruston’s perfectly affected vocals, layered harmonies, and aching emotional timbre bring this tragic track to life. It’s been on repeat, which probably isn’t great for my mood but definitely feeds my soul.”

Molly Holmberg, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Lonely If You Are” – Chase Rice
Songwriters: Chase Rice, Lindsey Rimes, Hunter Phelps

“This month I have been listening to Chase Rice’s new song “Lonely If You Are.” I think Rice is one of the most underrated artists, granted he hasn’t put out an album in two years, although Lambs and Lions is filled with gold. Finally garnering more airtime with “Eyes On You” and now with “Lonely If You Are,” his music is really starting to pick up the traction it had with his Ignite The Night album. It opens with the acoustic guitar and fades into a steamy romantic situation. This song is his way of letting the girl know that he will be there no matter what time of day or night it is.

“You could have your hair down, all curled up on the couch / And the quiet ain’t loud enough / It could be A.M. or P.M. / It could be middle of the week or the weekend baby / It ain’t too late or too far / Just call me ’cause I’m lonely / If you are, if you are”

“Lonely If You Are” is a complete hit and I would love to see it go Number 1.”

Pick: “Dream You Never Had” – Thomas Rhett
Songwriters: Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure, Rhett Akins, Thomas Rhett

“I love how country singers tend to write about their own lives, even if we as listeners can’t necessarily relate to their exact experience. “Dream You Never Had” is a beautiful tribute to Thomas Rhett’s wife Lauren, who fell in love with him before he was famous, and has stood by him through it all, even though it may not be the life she pictured for herself. Being under the spotlight can be tough, and this song thanks her for putting her dreams aside to let her partner shine, and it’s really powerful. When the song first came out, other artists were commenting on how true the sentiment was, and knowing that this is how many artists feel about their husbands and wives gives us as fans an inside look into the real lives of the stars we love.

“I know it’s been hard / I know it ain’t easy / Oh, but I couldn’t do one show without you / Oh, baby, believe me,/ Crowds have been crazy / But baby, I’m missing you bad / Just wanna say thank you for living this dream / I know you never had”

Pick: “Never Grow Old” – Houston Bernard Band
Songwriters: Houston Bernard, Mary Lynn Haller
“Life can get crazy and sometimes you just need that reminder to have fun and stay young. As hard as it may be, adulting will get easier and there’s no need to stress about it.”

Pick: “Leaving Love Behind” – Zac Brown Band
Songwriters: Clay Cook, Coy Bowles, Jimmy DeMartini, Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth

“Zac Brown Band spent the summer covering the US on The Owl Tour. I got to see this amazing show this summer at PNC Bank Arts Center. They played a few new tracks that will be included on their upcoming studio album. “There’s some really personal songs on here,” Brown told CNN about the upcoming new album. “Sometimes life can be challenging in facing things that are hard, and music has always been my therapy. It’s been my way to make it through a lot of things, so I’m blessed to be able to do that. You always get to hear about our lives in the music that we put out – lots of diversity on this album.” This one titled “Leaving Love Behind” was by far was the best. It was so emotional, so raw that it had me in tears. It was announced last year that Zac Brown and his wife of 12 years were separating and hearing him pour his heart into this tune, you could feel the pain the artist has been going through.

“I believe, yes I do, that everything we lose will be a gift in time, but the hardest part is leaving love behind.”

This song is so relatable to anyone who has been through a painful experience, whether that be a breakup, a loss, anything. I’m not even sure what in my heart the song was pulling on in that moment, but just listening to Brown pour his heart out with those words was enough to melt even the iciest of hearts.”

Pick: “homecoming queen?” – Kelsea Ballerini
Songwriters: Jimmy Robbins, Kelsea Ballerini, Nicolle Galyon

“Whenever an artist releases such a vulnerable and relatable song like this, it holds a special place in my heart. Kelsea truly knocked it out of the park with this one; accepting your flaws and not being afraid to admit that everything is not perfect, though they may seem it on the outside. Songs like this are why I love country music so much.”

Pick: “Remember You Young” – Thomas Rhett
Songwriters: Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure, Thomas Rhett

“I have always been a fan of Thomas Rhett but I never really took the time to listen to all of his songs, including the more low-key ones that are not on the radio. After seeing the title “Remember You Young”, and knowing how deep Thomas Rhett’s music can be, I was definitely curious to give it a listen.

After listening to it just once and reading through the lyrics, I was almost brought to tears. This song carries such an interesting and sentimental meaning. A lot of times in our daily lives we are so caught up in work, obligations and just being extremely busy that we often forget about the young person we once were, full of imagination, hope and innocence. The song talks about always being able to bring yourself back to those times when you were a child, or in college having some of the best times of your life, and even references his wife, daughters and some of his best friends and family.

I am obsessed with this song and have been playing it over and over again after hearing it, and am now encouraged to listen to more of his most recent album Center Point Road, and hear what other meaningful and amazing songs are on this album waiting to be heard by country music fans like me.”

Pick: “Catch A Cold One” – Jake Owen
Songwriters: Jon Nite, Josh Thompson, Justin Ebach

“As the summer quickly comes to an end, for my pick this month I decided to go with Jake Owen’s song, “Catch A Cold One.” This track was written by Jon Nite, Josh Thompson, and Justin Ebach and it is a song about fishing with your grandfather, reflecting on life, and accepting that when things may not always seem to be going right – keep a positive attitude.  “Catch A Cold One” is refreshing in a sense that it reminds us all that even if “you can’t always catch a break or a big one,” not to worry because “you can always catch a cold one.”
One of my favorite parts of the song is the second verse when Owen reflects on his grandfather’s advice and sings, “Yeah, I didn’t get it then, but I sure do now / It’s kinda up to you how it all turns out / Life ain’t always pinewood docks and blue skies / Every time I reach down in the ice / I can still hear him from the other side.”  “Catch A Cold One” is a feel-good, laid back, country song with a subtle message that we can all relate to.”

Pick: “Still Our Town” – Josh Kerr
Songwriters: Jordan Minton, Josh Kerr

“This month I’m loving songwriter, turned solo artist, Josh Kerr! He recently released two songs, “Still Our Town” and “Oklahoma.” The former is my pick for this month. I love how relatable the track is. Kerr depicts how places that use to feel like yours, now feel like it belongs to your ex because of all the memories that were made there. It’s a simple concept, but Kerr delivers the message in a new and innovative way. Also, the beat is super catchy, which only adds to the enticing tune.

“I used to have it all to myself / Every street light, every stop sign / Country line to county line / Now you’re in all the parts that I love / Every inch and every corner / Every song on the radio.”

I love songwriters, and I’m especially loving watching talented songwriters release their own music. Go download “Still Our Town!” I can’t wait to see what Kerr drops next.”

Old Dominion Release New Track “Midnight Mess Around”

Midnight Mess Around

Reigning CMA and ACM Vocal Group of the Year, Old Dominion are gearing up for the release of their self-titled third studio album slated for release next month, on October 25th. With that, the band has released the sixth song from the forthcoming record, entitled “Midnight Mess Around.”

The fun and provocative song is seemingly catchy with its upbeat tune and racy lyrics. Lead singer Matthew Ramsey, lead guitarist Brad Tursi, and guitar/key player Trevor Rosen co-penned with the late beloved Andrew Dorff, and with hit-maker Shane McAnally as the producer.

“’Cause I got it bad and I can’t stop / The feeling that I gotta have you right now / How ’bout a midnight, midnight mess around / I know which road, which road to take you down / So let your hair and your dress fall to the ground / How ‘bout a midnight, midnight mess around”

Along with the song’s release, comes a lyric video with behind the scenes clips of the band creating and recording the risque jam. Watch below.

The band took to their Twitter to share the decision behind putting this track on the album, “It’s been a favorite for a while. As we got deeper into recording this album, it seemed we were missing that sexy country feel. So we messed around.”

Last week, the chart-topping band announced their next headlining ‘We Are Old Dominion’ fourteen-date Canadian tour kicking off this December with special guests Mitchell Tenpenny and Meghan Patrick. U.S. dates have yet to be announced but we will certainly keep you updated when they do!
