Ella Langley: ‘hungover’ – Debut Album Review

Ella Langley releases her debut album, hungover, out now, August 2nd on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project here.

With a uniquely honeyed tone and an uncanny vulnerability, Ella Langley has been routinely labeled as one to watch in country music. With the release of her debut full-length album, hungover, out now, she proves why.

The collection features fourteen new tracks, all written or co-written by the Alabama native, alongside Nashville heavyweights like Will Bundy, Brett James, Rhett Akins, Laura Veltz, and more.

“This has been my dream for my whole entire life, so releasing my very first record is a really good feeling, and I’m so proud of it,” Langley says of the Sawgod Records/Columbia LP. “Before this record was even finished, I remember driving around in my car listening to ‘Hungover,’ and it hit me that it was the perfect title to encapsulate this era of my life and all the feelings I’ve poured into the songs. There’s a lot of different ways you can be hungover, but Lord knows every hangover hurts.”

That hurt is a prominent theme throughout the collection, weaving its way in different ways through Langley’s emotive grit and soulful sound. Her lyrics are smart and clever, telling incredibly vulnerable stories in a way that’s both poignant and triumphant.

The titular track is an immediate example of Langley’s prowess as both a songwriter and a vocalist, her stunning tone punctuating the mournful ballad that burns with the ache of a toxic relationship. Over bluesy electric guitars, her soulful vocals cascade through the ode to last call mistakes and the subsequent hangover that comes the next morning.

“Yeah I’m hungover // Still a long way from sober // Dammit I’m hurtin’ // This morning I’m learning // How much that Bourbon in your kiss don’t lead to closure // And yeah I’m hungover // This on again, off again is takin’ its toll // I try but I can’t seem to tell myself no”

“Love You Tonight” tackles a similar theme, as she deals with the aftermath of “doing what I swore I wouldn’t do. It’s a modern day retelling of Lee Ann Womack’s “I May Hate Myself in the Morning,” as she proclaims, “Gonna love you tonight, gonna hate me tomorrow.”

Heartache songs are foremost on the album, but no two are alike. “I Blame the Bar” is one of the most unique lyrical breakup tracks in recent memory, blaming the place of the meet cute for her heartbreak, as opposed to the guy who did the breaking. Meanwhile, “Better Be Tough” is an almost raucous pop-rock-tinted kiss off to a cheating boyfriend that shows Langley isn’t taking a guy’s BS.

On “Paint the Town Blue,” she’s drinking to forget her pain, accepting that she needs to drown her sorrows to truly move on, while “Cowboy Friends” finds her moving up and moving on to get over a terrible ex. The song finds her channeling hints of Miranda Lambert meets Kacey Musgraves, with its unapologetic lyrics as she looks past one bad boy to the next. “So saddle up and ride away, It ain’t like it was love anyways,” She sings teasingly. “I won’t have no trouble rounding up the next when this ends, I’ve got me more than a few cowboy friends.”

Langley is sunny and optimistic on tunes like “Nicotine,” which finds her looking for a new love to be her new addiction, while “You Look Like You Love Me” is a clear stylistic standout on the album. Featuring fellow Alabama native Riley Green, the viral release finds the pair mixing spoken verses with a singsong chorus on the uniquely timeless country track.

“Girl Who Drank Wine” and “Closest to Heaven” are classic country story songs, with the former a smoky-bar Western that tells the tale of a one night stand where the girl walks away with a cowboy’s heart. Meanwhile, “Heaven” provides an especially ethereal moment, recalling the kind of eternal love between her grandparents that is the closest thing to Heaven on Earth.

Three of the album’s most special tracks come late in the album, with “Monsters” finding her both utterly  vulnerable and relatable. On the introspective track, she battles the “real monsters” living inside her head, dealing with self-doubt, painful memories, and being her own worst critic.

“Inside my head I over-analyze // Let my worst critic criticize // Every last mistake I ever made // Every woulda, coulda, shoulda, on replay // I’ve got some real monsters // Livin’ inside my head // Memories I’d like to leave // Shoved up under my bed // Caught up in a bad dream // Don’t even have to sleep // To see every regret, take it from me // I’ve got some real monsters // Livin’ inside my head”

The album’s final two tracks are both sparse and acoustic, with “Cowgirl Don’t Cry” shining as an ode to a girl who has been numbed by heartbreak. Finally, “Broken In” closes the album in a stunning manner, her voice on full display as she sings that oftentimes, things are better when they’ve been used. Ranging from horses to trucks to hearts and hands, things are just better when they’ve got some miles and some scars.

For Ella Langley, that is true of the music on hungover, each song showing pain and scars that ultimately led to something beautiful.

Jelly Roll and mgk Collaborate on Country-inspired “Lonely Road”

Jelly Roll and mgk collaborate on a country-inspired new song, “Lonely Road,” out now, July 26th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Country has never been cooler. Country songs are dominating the pop charts, artists are selling out football stadiums, and pop stars are switching genres and dropping full-length country albums. Rapper/pop-punk rocker, Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) joins Beyonce, Post Malone, and other A-List musicians to head to Nashville and churn out country records. After beautifully covering Zach Bryan’s “Sun To Me,” MGK teamed up with one of the industry’s most in-demand collaborators, Jelly Roll, to record a rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” titled,” Lonely Road.”

The song’s title accurately depicts its subject matter—the singer’s significant other moved out and there is no vice that can erase his loneliness. He promises he will be waiting for her at home if she ever decides to come back. The hard-hitting music video illustrates MGK and Jelly Roll as dead-end workers, struggling to make rent. MGK decides to take a risk and rob a bank to help support his pregnant wife at home. With the cops hot on his trail, he drops the money into his co-worker’s truck before they catch and arrest him. The video closes eight months in the future with his daughter visiting him in prison.

“Lonely road, take me home // To the place, that we went wrong // Where’d you go now? // It’s been a ghost town // And I’m still here, all alone // Lonely road”

Machine Gun Kelly gained mainstream popularity when he switched from hip-hop to punk rock in 2020 with his release of Tickets To My Downfall. Jelly Roll is very familiar with switching genres as well. The Nashville-native was a rapper himself until his hit, “Son Of A Sinner” caught the attention of country music fans before officially hitting radio in March 2022. Since then, Jelly Roll has been one of the genre’s most successful artists, winning a CMA award and three CMT awards in 2023, and being nominated for two Grammy’s in 2024. After releasing his debut country record, Whitsitt Chapel, numerous other artists including Brantley Gilbert, Tyler Farr, Craig Morgan, Cody Johnson, ERNEST, and Dustin Lynch have featured Jelly Roll on their tracks.

Based off “Lonely Road” and his Zach Bryan cover, it seems like MGK will fit right into the country scene. Although a full-length project is still unconfirmed, his Instagram page shows he has spent some extended time in Nashville the past few months, so fans can optimistically expect more releases like this.

There is nothing like cross-genre collaborations between a country artist and another superstar in another genre. “A few months ago the one and only @tiesto reached out to see if i’d want to collaborate with him on his next single. i was deep into the process of writing and recording my next album and was determined to save all my energy and focus for that (bc just wait…). but everything about the song he sent me and the vision he had for it intrigued me. i knew it’d push me out of my comfort zone, challenge me and ultimately make me a better creative human. so i said yes. everything from the phrasing, to the studio, to the way we approached the vocal, the music video (omg the music video) has been bold. it’s been different. and i’ve felt brave for going there,” shared the singer on her Instagram.

While the collaboration may have been unexpected, it certainly works! Springsteen shared that she couldn’t pass up the opportunity, and we are glad she didn’t!

Ryan and Rory: Self-titled Debut EP – EP Review

Ryan and Rory share their self-titled debut EP, Ryan and Rory, available now, July 26th, on all streaming platforms. Listen here!

With male duos often serving as a driving force in country music, it’s time for a new pair to emerge. Enter BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville’s newest duo: Ryan and Rory.

Composed of former Hot Chelle Rae frontman Ryan Follesé and multi-instrumentalist Rory John Zak, the duo is bursting onto the scene with their debut self-titled EP, out now. Raised in Nashville with songwriter parents, Follesé co-wrote five of the EP’s six new songs, exchanging harmonic melodies with Zak in a way that elevates the clever lyrics.

The collection kicks off with the previously-released “Pour Decisions,” a catchy and slick ode to drowning a broken heart in drinks and a rebound. Here, they cleverly turn the phrases “poor decisions” to reflect those alcohol-induced “pour decisions.”

“We both got broken hearts, try to numb it with some sipping // So how’s about we let thе liquor do the heavy lifting // Can only get so far gеtting over them with drinking // The only way to fix it is to make some pour decisions”

Heartbreak, love lost, and drinking tunes dominate the EP with “Drunk and Lonely,” another clear standout. On the swinging, two-stepping jaunt, they’re moving up and moving on, musing that We go together like drunk and lonely.” Likewise, “The State I’m In” deals with the regret of following a long distance love, only to discover it was for naught. “I ripped my roots right out the ground, they muse mournfully, “to chase her green eyes.”

“Cowboy Cry” shows the band’s softer side, the acoustic-leaning ballad lamenting a woman who leaves a path of broken cowboy hearts in her wake. She’s a heartbreaker and a pistol that can’t be tamed, and they’ve been burned.

“She’s always got one boot out the door, now you can’t make her stay, make her love you, she don’t stay in love too long, no you can’t rope the wind if you wanted to… She can make a cowboy cry”

The EP ends with the one-two punch of “This Town” and “Thanks Mama.” The former celebrates chasing new dreams with someone special, while the latter is a sparse and sweet celebration of a man’s mother. Co-penned by Follesé, alongside his brother, sister, and father, the song recalls the advice and love that helped shape him into the man he is. “Might’ve been born a sinner, but I was raised by a saint,” The pair harmonize. “For all I am, thanks Mama.”

On their debut EP, Ryan & Rory are introducing themselves as a new duo to keep in mind. Mixing clever lyrics and stunning harmonies with touches of Dan + Shay and hints of Brooks & Dunn, Ryan & Rory are the next heir apparent to the country duo throne.

Ryan and Rory Track List:

  1. Pour Decisions
  2. State I’m In
  3. Cowboy Cry
  4. Drunk and Lonely

Dylan Marlowe is one of the most exciting rising singer-songwriters in country music right now. Each of his songs unapologetically speak to who he is and what he believes in, whether the song draws inspiration from his life or not. Today, Marlowe’s grows his music collection with a brand new song called, “Devil On My Shoulder,” and the announcement of his debut album, Mid Twenties Crisis, out September 27th.

Written by Marlowe with Kyle Fisherman, Beau Bailey, and Rocky Block, “Devil On My Shoulder” is a song about trying everything to get over someone, but you still cannot get them off your mind. The song is a relatable, nostalgic storytelling song that feels like a country anthem, much like many of Marlowe’s songs do.

“He started whisperin’ // I started listenin’ // Damn, he started making sense // So, I drove my truck out of gas // I drank the bar out of beer // Emptied my pocket of cash // Trying to make you disappear // I found a new pairs of blues // Thought they’d put you in the past // Everything he told me to do, girl it ain’t doing jack // God made a hell of an angel when he made you // Even the devil on my shoulder don’t know what to do”

Marlowe is one of the most promising rising stars in country music right now. “Devil On My Shoulder” is another notch in his belt! As for the debut album, Marlowe shares in a recent press release, “Mid-Twenties Crisis is a record I wrote in my mid-twenties, really over the last two or three years. There’s a bunch of songs that are going to be fun to play live. I also thought it was really important to make sure I had some deeper lyrics as well. ‘Mid-Twenties Crisis’ was actually the last song to make the record. I’m so proud of that song – it’s kind of vulnerable but I hope y’all can relate and that you love the record.”

Tigirlily Gold: ‘Blonde’ – Album Review

Tigirlily Gold release their new album, Blonde, out now, July 26th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project here.

For sisters Kendra and Krista Slaubaugh, their debut album as Tigirlily Gold is representative of who they are and what they stand for. Out now on Monument Records, the duo’s Blonde, goes much deeper than a hair color.

“I hope listeners feel like they could hang out with us on a Friday night or have a heart-to-heart on a Sunday morning, that every emotion you feel is valid, that some nights you want to go shoot tequila and some nights you want to cry over a boy who shattered you,” shares Kendra in a statement. “At the end of the day, no one has it all together, and we’re all figuring out how to navigate love, loss, friends, memories, self-love, confidence.”

Featuring ten tracks, eight of which the pair co-wrote, Blonde takes listeners on a unique journey through love, loss, and self discovery. “Blonde is all about being undeniably and unapologetically yourself,” reveals Krista. “We want everyone to feel confident and vulnerable enough at the same time to say what they need to say.”

The album opens with its titular track, a light and twangy fête to those fair and flaxen locks. While it may seem surface level, the song invites listeners to embrace their inner Dolly with its sing-songy call and response. It’s a fun intro to the collection, immediately inviting listeners in for more.

“You can’t buy happiness // But you can buy hair like these // It’s a Dolly Parton state of mind // It’s Marilyn leavin’ Norma Jean behind // From dirty to platinum // We’re just trying to have some fun // When we’re feeling // Low, we highlightin’ up // Everyday’s a good day when you’re wakin’ up // Ugh blonde // Oo-oo oo-oo yeah // So blonde”

Likewise, the viral hit “Shoot Tequila” is a rousing ode to the love-hate relationship with their drink of choice. For them, tequila is responsible for great nights, bad decisions, and even worse mornings. It’s the perfect female-led drinking song, and almost everyone can relate to its messaging.

“I shouldn’t do it // But I don’t remember why // Such a bad influence, but you’re looking good tonight // Ah, shoot tequila // You’re good at what ya do, tequila // And it goes like One tequila, two tequila, three tequila more If I had a little sense, I would’ve stopped at four // ‘Stead of cursing your name on the bathroom floor // Swear to God I won’t drink tequila no more”

The sibling duo deals with bad boys who made bad decisions on songs like “I Tried a Ring On,” “Stupid Prizes,” and “Leroy.” While “Stupid Prizes” is a swampy and gritty look at the mind games that lead to seemingly unexpected consequences, “Leroy” is about a guy who can’t grow up and outrun the negative influence of his friends.

“I Tried a Ring On” is a clear standout, a clever heartbreak anthem about an ill-fated relationship that finds them grappling with the end of forever. While they’ll grieve and then move on, they’re stuck in the angry stage, musing, “I’m sure I’ll get over you being gone, I just feel stupid, I tried a ring on.”

It’s not all heartbreak and heartache on Blonde, with love songs taking hold on tracks like “Only Once,” “End Up Us,” and the seductive “Move On.” While the latter puts them in the mood to flirt and make the first move with a new guy, “Only Once” documents those kinds of feelings that only come along once in a lifetime. Likewise, “End Up Us” is a swoon worthy ballad about the kind of love that was written in the stars. “‘End Up Us’ is the first love song released off our Blonde album. We believe real love, if meant to be, will always find its way,” Tigirlily Gold shares. “Every love has its own journey, and we can’t wait to see people share their love stories with this song!”

“Hometown Song” provides an especially unique moment on the LP, offering an alternative view to those country songs that seem to idolize and venerate their hometowns. Here, the North Dakota natives grapple with the dichotomy of both loving and hating the town that raised them. “Took me 18 years to get out, But I’m still tryna move on,” They harmonize. “I kinda wanna run back to it // But Lord, I’m grateful to be gone”

The collection ends with a countrified cover of the 2007 Leona Lewis hit, “Bleeding Love,” that has become a staple of the sisters’ live show. Here, they stay true to the original but put a unique twang on it, breathing new life into a song that everybody knows. It’s reminiscent of Sugarland’s take on Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” and we can’t wait ‘til the inevitable Tigirlily Gold and Leona Lewis collab for a live performance.

For Tigirlily Gold, Blonde is representative of much more than a hair color, but a way of life. Here, they’re free-spirited and full of vulnerability, life, love, and so much more.

Jordan Davis Shares Brand New Song “I Ain’t Sayin'”

Jordan Davis shares new song “I Ain’t Sayin’,” out now, July 26th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Jordan Davis is arguably one of the most underrated country music stars right now. He cranks out hit after hit, and is constantly garnering new fans with each and every release. A Country Swag favorite, Davis deserves all the accolades continuously coming his way. Today the singer-songwriter shares his brand new song, “I Ain’t Sayin’,” after playing it live for fans at MetLife Stadium on July 20th, 2024.

“I Ain’t Sayin'” is arguably one of Davis’ most impressive up-tempo songs of late. Much like his debut singles, “Singles You Up,” the new song leans into the bad-boy persona, while still having that sweet and confident charisma that we all have grown to love from the now, family-man.

“I ain’t sayin’ I’m an angel, baby if you can’t tell // No I ain’t the take-you-home to mama type // And I ain’t sayin’ he’s a bad guy, all I know is that guy // Must’ve up and lost his mind tonight // Cause you’re down to the ice in that drink // He didn’t buy, I’m here and he’s MIA // That ain’t no kind of love, I’m not sayin’ I’m the one // I’m just sayin’ he sure as hell ain’t // He sure as hell ain’t

“I Ain’t Sayin'” feels like an instant hit. While the song may not tug at your heartstrings like “Buy Dirt” and “Next Thing You Know,” it will feel relatable, fun, and impossible not to listen to again and again!

Brad Tursi ‘Parallel Love’ – Debut Album Review

Brad Tursi’s debut album, Parallel Love is out now, July 19th on all streaming platforms. Take a listen and read our full review below.

While you may or may not be familiar with the name Brad Tursi, chances are you’re familiar with his work. For one, he’s a key member of Old Dominion, as a lead writer and guitarist. He’s also an acclaimed songwriter on his own, having penned mega hits for Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, and many, many more.

Now, the Connecticut native is making a go of it as a solo artist, releasing his debut project, Parallel Love. While it’s not the bombastic country Old Dominion is known for, the music on the project is honest and relatable, allowing Tursi to show off the graveled rasp of a blue-eyed-soul-singer-songwriter.

“This process was purely creative. I wasn’t even sure I’d release a project, but when I played it for my team, they all reacted really positively,” revealed Tursi in a statement. “It felt like everything aligned to finally share it.”

Additionally, the singer-songwriter took to Twitter to share that he has no plans to leave Old Dominion, but simply wanted to take his fans on a bit of a journey. “Some of these songs are more than 10 years old. This may be a little departure from what you are used to from me (don’t worry, I’m NOT leaving OD!!) but I hope you take the ride with me!”

The album opens and closes with snippets of a tune called “Oh Darlin,” which also serves as an interlude, expertly tying the chapters of the LP together. The song weaves its way through the album, providing a unique sort of cohesion as Tursi tells the tales of life on the road, missed connections, longtime friendship, finding love, and everything in-between.

As “Oh Darlin’” tells the tale of a music man, longing for love and dealing with the trappings of the road, it flows seamlessly into “Church Bells and Train Whistles,” melodically finding Tursi a man torn between running and settling down. Unsure if he wants to run or be tied down, the singer-songwriter effortlessly tells the tale of a man caught between both worlds.

With a voice that has shades of the rasp of Kip Moore and the soul of Andy Davis, Tursi truly invites listeners on a journey. “Question the Universe” is a piano-driven ballad, finding him struggling with the cruel fate of meeting “the right person, wrong time.”

“Where You Been” is a celebratory ballad about the ease of an old friendship, while “Crazy Life” is a rootsy midtempo that has him grappling with the insanity of life as a touring musician.

“Night after lonesome night I chase this dream // But sometimes it feels like it’s chasing me // ‘Cause rock and roll will save your soul // And break your heart like highway lines // White spotlights and star-filled nights // Make dreams come true // And good girls cry // Alone at home by candlelight // But I’m still crazy for this crazy life”

The LP’s title track is a clear standout, a folksy guitar-driven jaunt that celebrates the kind of love that grows, changes, and endures. Featuring ethereal vocals from fellow songwriter Trannie Anderson, the song is a transcendent look at a special kind of love.

“We’re like two wildflowers // Growing toward the sun // You next to me, me next to you // Lord, I love to watch you bloom // Growing in a parallel love”

Love is a prominent theme in the second half of the collection, Tursi finding it and grabbing on tightly. On the bluesy “Lover and a Friend,” he knows he’s found something special in one who fills both roles, while the stunning “Afraid to Lose” has him realizing he can’t go on without her.

“It gets a little scary for sure // When I realize that you’re // Someone I’m afraid to lose // If you found another lover I don’t know what I’d do // You’re someone I’m afraid to lose, it’s true // And that’s how I know, I know I love you”

While it would’ve been easy for Brad Tursi to release an album full of songs that were surefire hits or Old Dominion castoffs, he took a different, parallel journey on Parallel Love. Instead, he channels his inner songwriter, crafting gorgeous stories over acoustic guitars and rootsy riffs that show a different side of the acclaimed artist.
