The Beginning:

Today’s spotlight shines on an artist, who has firmly planted his feet into the country music genre. Brent Cobb has been a musician all of his life and has experienced so many great things throughout his blossoming career.

Growing up in small-town Georgia, Cobb was born into a musical household. “We ain’t ever had no money,” began the singer, “but there is a lot of music that comes from here, plus my dad still plays in a band every weekend and opened for a lot of people, when I was growing up.”

During his childhood, the singer-songwriter recalls being infatuated with many artists, who happened to grow up near his hometown in Georgia in neighboring small towns like Macon, Albany, and more. Heavily influenced by his father, as well as artists like The Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, and Dolly Parton, Cobb was a true music fan throughout his life.

“Where I’m from you have Macon, where’s there is so much musical influences. The first thing people usually think of when they hear Macon is The Allman Brothers, but Otis Redding was also from Macon,” shared the singer. “Then right down the road you have Ray Charles from Albany, which is 30 minutes down the road from where I’m from. Then you go over a little bit, you have James Charles. So you have the founding fathers of all music really.”

In a family who championed a love for music, Cobb thought of music as a “heart-led” thing rather than a career move. “I was always a songwriter, even when I was a kid. When I was six, seven years old, I would write songs about everything […] I didn’t think of it as a career, it was always just something fun to do, that I enjoyed doing.”

The Turning Point:

Interestingly enough, Cobb began to consider a career in music when he was around eighteen years old. After creating a six song acoustic demo for fun, a sequence of events led that dream to become a reality.

“When I was eighteen, I had a great aunt that passed away, and I had to be a pole bearer at her funeral in Richmond, Georgia, which is where my Cobb side of the family is from,” began the singer. “At this funeral, I met a distant cousin of mine and because we are all a musical family, word had gotten around that this cousin was a big L.A. producer, and I that had been writing songs and I had recorded a little six song demo. I shamelessly offered to give him that little demo, and I did.”

Eventually, that same cousin actually listened to his demo, and invited him to come make a record in L.A. with him. Cobb began going back and forth to L.A. for about a year and half, all while playing in a cover band in his hometown.

In 2007, the singer was invited to open up for Luke Bryan, where his bassist gave the little demo to Bryan himself. Subsequently, Bryan invited Cobb to Nashville, and introduced him to different people around town including the people at Carnival Music Publishing.

Deciding to remain loyal to his blossoming career in L.A., Cobb decided to go that route. After a four month stint in L.A., he decided it wasn’t for him. Eventually, that led him to move to Nashville, where he worked at Walgreens for a year before calling his connections at Carnival Music Publishing. “I’ve been with Carnival Music Publishing ever since,” shared the singer.

Today:

Flash forward to today, Cobb has several records to his name. Most recently, the singer-songwriter released his first self-produced record called Southern Star. The ten song project is a true love letter to Cobb’s home state of Georgia. “I was not the person that grew up in a small town that wanted to escape one day, I just never really had any aspirations to leave where I’m from, but I knew I could probably. I think the reason I felt that way is because my dad didn’t do that.”

While Southern Star is about Georgia and all of the great musicians that hail from the start, the record was inspired by Cobb’s late friend Jason Cope, who went by Rowdy. An outlaw hero, a guitarist, a producer, and a pioneer for independent country music, Rowdy was a true inspiration and friend to Cobb.

“I was coming to a place where I needed to make an album for my soul. Rowdy hung out at a bar called the ‘Southern Star.’ […] We’d go hang out there, and I remembered that place and then Rowdy passed away in 2021, and I think that started the inspiration maybe,” he shared. Adding, “I always felt like he didn’t get enough credit for being someone who helped springboard some of this rise to independent country music, because he was in the background writing, and playing guitar, but he influenced a lot of artists.”

This led Cobb to create a record called Southern Star that embodies all of the stars that may or may not be superstars, but sure are Southern stars. “I was thinking about that and the history of music from where I’m from, and I knew that I had to make the album,” shared the singer. “I wrote “Southern Star” pretty much right at that moment and then the rest of the songs just fell out.”

Brent Cobb’s brand new album, Southern Star is out now, September 22nd on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new music below.

In his first self-produced album, Brent Cobb is sharing a love letter to his Southern roots. The ten song project speaks to Cobb’s artistry as both a singer and as a songwriter. Each of the ten tracks touch on different themes through life that many of us can relate to.

“You know how when you’re growing up, you’re told that if you ever get lost out there, look for the northern star to help find direction back home? Well, I’m from Georgia. So, I always look for the southern star,” explains Cobb in a recent press release. “This album, the songs, the sounds… it’s all a product of where I’m from both musically and environmentally. Historically and presently, that place also happens to be the same place that cultivated a good many of the most influential artists in the whole world of music. Music as we know it would not exist without the American south. It’s funky and sentimental. It’s simple and complex.”

A true tribute simplicity and complexity of life and music, Cobb’s new album, Southern State is a must-listen to!

Hailey Whitters: ‘Living The Dream’ – Deluxe Album Review

Hailey Whitters’ brand new deluxe album LIVING THE DREAM is available now, February 26th, everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the project.

Hailey Whitters’ ‘Living The Dream – Deluxe Album’ is available everywhere now, February 26th

For almost exactly a year, rising singer-songwriter and former Swag Spotlight artist, Hailey Whitters has been riding the high from the release of her debut full-length record The Dream. Clearly feeling like the album’s journey was not completely finished, the profound songstress is releasing a deluxe version of the project adding five new songs to the record, officially out today!

The record features familiar songs and fan-favorites like “Ten Year Town” and “Janice at the Hotel Bar.” The former is her dynamite former single, a song that paints the picture of what it was like for Whitters as she was trying to figure out if she should continue to try to ‘make it’ in Nashville. Written with the exceptional Brandy Clark, the track is one that will be a staple for Whitters for a long time coming.

The latter is another one of our favorites. Reminiscent of Lori McKenna’s awe-inspiring, “Humble and Kind”, Whitters combined forces with McKenna to express a real-life tale about an encounter with a wise woman named Janice. The song offers advice on how to live a good life, suggesting simple lessons like “get on the pill if you ain’t ready to start a family” and “make good love, good company.”

The songstress continues to remind us to be appreciative of life’s little moments in “The Days,” while expressing her truth in the breathtaking “Loose Strings,” a song about both love and loss. In “Heartland,” Whitters once again sings about life not going the way she thought it would, but alas, she knows she can always fall back on her Midwestern roots. “Heart – land in the middle of nowhere.”

The record also features “Happy People”, a song that Whitters wrote and was recorded by Little Big Town on their album, The Breaker. This new version is a mid-tempo jam that is laced with authenticity, gritty lyrics, and a traditional-country rooted instrumental. It focuses on the simple, yet complex concept of happiness and how to obtain it.

Whitters even collaborates with LBT on a brand new song on the record called “Fillin’ My Cup.” The track is a fun-loving, traditional-country jam, filled with banjos and eloquent harmonies. We’d love to see Little Big Town and Whitters perform this one live!

Like “Fillin’ My Cup,” the other four brand new songs are also collaborations. On “How Far Can I Go,” the songstress fulfills a childhood dream and duets with country superstar, Trisha Yearwood. The duet is truly timeless, and it feels like the two women have been singing together forever. Similarly, “Glad To Be Here,” Whitters’ dueling duet with Brent Cobb is just as enticing. The song is a nostalgic track about appreciating where you are, especially your hometown.

One of our favorite collaborations off the record is “How To Break A Heart.” A song that is truly songwriting and storytelling at its finest. It’s no surprise that Whitters combined her talent with two extraordinary musicians, Lori McKenna and Hillary Lindsey. The song is so beautiful and captivating both lyrically and melodically.

Whitters also collaborates with fellow rising country star, Jordan Davis on “The Ride,” the final song on the record. Although different than the other collaborations, Whitters and Davis prove how talented they both are. Their ability to stay true to their individual sounds, while creating something new and fresh has superstardom written all over it for both of them.

Of course, we would be remiss if we did not mention the closing track off the original version of the album, a song entitled “Livin’ The Dream.” Whitters inspires people to look at every step, every trial, and every hardship as part of ‘The Dream.’ For the songstress, her grind in Nashville, which included waiting on tables and living in a small apartment are all important parts of her journey, her story, and ultimately, her dream.

“Oh the one thing I’ve learned is that the world keeps on spinning / Love is the only thing that makes it go round / I’ve given it all with the time I’ve been given / I’m out here livin’ / Yeah we all just livin’ / the dream”

Whitters is an artist that is done trying to fit whatever mold the industry tries to push female singers into. Her artistry rivals that of any established superstar in country music, but it is her infectious vocals, stellar songwriter, and pure talent and perseverance that is going to take her far. Moreover, the fact that she chose to collaborate with the artists and songwriters that have helped her or inspired her on her journey just shows how proud she is of her craft.

Brent Cobb: Keep ‘Em On They Toes Album Review

Brent Cobb’s new album, ‘Keep ‘Em On They Toes’ is available now, October 2nd. Take a listen and check out our album review below as we dig a little deeper into the collection of songs.

Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter Brent Cobb pays homage to his indie heritage in his latest album Keep ‘Em on They Toes. The project was released on his own label, Ol’ Buddy Records, via Thirty Tigers. The collection was produced by Brad Cook, who has produced artists to the likes of Bon Iver, Waxahatchie, and more, and is an assemblage of ten new songs including the lively title track.

“Keep ‘Em on They Toes” is a lighthearted, earthy tune with reminiscences of a Jack Johnson ambiance. Written with his wife Layne, it’s a tale of eluding the woes when ignorance is bliss. The song coincides with a music video directed by Christian Hanson which documents the full circle of a relationship.

“Shut Up and Sing” trails off of the album’s opener and takes what some people order and turns it upside down. Taking a remark often made towards successful artists who speak out, Cobb alludes to the implication that every so often it’s okay for the artistic connotation to take the lead. Sometimes the music just does the talking. He insinuates at the advice given not to talk, so he took it.. and made his voice hear another way…

“I wondered what I would shut and sing // And then it hit me // Lord have mercy, all us earthly fools // There’s poison in our rhetoric and bullets in our schools. // So I sing, what the hell is going on here? // Let’s take these blinders off our eyes and pull the cotton from our ears.”

“Good Times and Good Lovin’” is a lot less cheeky than the prior and embellishes a swing-enticed rhythm and sensual keys. Hey, good times and good loving may not last forever, as told, but we sure as hell can keep this song playing all night.

“Sometimes I’m A Clown” is another sultry, slow groove of the bunch encompassing mild instrumentation while “Dust Under My Rug” speeds it up a little. The tempo is raised and makes the dance floor immensely inviting. “Soap Box” is “Shut Up and Sing” 2.0 but more civil. The Ellaville native sings, “Well good god, let’s hop off the soapbox and get along,” while over an abundance of jazz-influenced piano riffs and angelic female harmonics.

“The World Is Ending” is a track that was previously released in June in the depths of the pandemic when everything was still so uncertain. Cobb wrote the track years prior, but with today’s setting, was awfully appropriate to release now.

“Little Stuff”, the album’s final track, calmly concludes the project making it clear that it’s the little things that mean the absolute most.

Overall, Cobb’s Keep ‘Em On They Toes is a must-listen for fans of all genres.

NYCS First Impression: Brent Cobb ‘No Place Left to Leave’

By Michal Pietrzak

Brent Cobb No Place Left to Leave

Brent Cobb’s No Place Left to Leave is a diverse and re-issued album. It’s not just country it’s a blend of Americana, Southern Rock and a pinch of Outlaw country. All of these pieces combined to make an album that many different music fans can enjoy. As you can read in his Spotify bio “Country songs of Ellaville, Georgia Native often celebrate and mythologize rural small-town life” and you can actually sense that sentiment when listening to the project. All songs on a record are written by himself which makes it more unique and impressive. It feels like back to the basics of a good ole meaningful country song.

No Place Left To Leave is a 10-track record that starts with Americana touch and beautiful sound of harmonica followed by some country vibes then southern rock takes the lead and acoustic, singer-songwriter sounds marks the end. A blend of all kinds of instruments makes this album great and shows how diverse country music is within its own genre. If you’ve got 37 minutes, spend them on listening No Place Left To Leave.

Cobb took to social media to explain the decision to re-release the project, stating “Eleven years and 45 cuts later I’m still there making a living writing songs. It’s the last album of mine that my grandpa ever heard. Thanks to the help of my manager Don VanCleave I was fortunate enough this past year to be able to buy this album and actually own those masters myself. It’s for all of these reasons that this album is the first release on my own label, Ol’ Buddy Records. I owe it everything. Happy re-release day, “No Place Left To Leave”. Thanks for being so good to me.”

There are 3 songs are worth listening to more than just a couple of times. Black Creek is a sort of redemption song. Letting go of troubled past and asking for forgiveness might be a hard thing but a purifying. You can feel that in Cobb’s voice if you listen carefully. Warning: Slow, soft sounds and great lyrics may lead to reflections. “

“Oh, black creek, take me to that place / Wash my sins away / Won’t you wash my sins away?”

Lavenders and Loving Gestures. The title may implicate it’s a love song but it’s a heartbreaking goodbye song and soft sounds don’t make it easier. He realizes that he can’t give his dear one the love that she deserves. Therefore he tries to let her go.

“Lavenders and loving gestures / They’re just some things right now I can’t give / If you think there’s a one you can love again / But I know there is  / I think you can”

Hold Me Closely. Finding love might be a challenge and deep true love is even harder to find. Everyone needs someone who will be a rock for them and a song is just about that. Simple yet beautiful. Love someone 100% or don’t. Be the light for significant other in dark times and be cheer in bright times. That the point of the song.

“There’s a place called my life / Don’t know if I can travel alone / Need someone to take me by my hand / Lead me safely to promise land / Hold me closely, hold me softly / Don’t let me fall on my own”

After a career full of creating meaningful music that his fans love, re-releasing No Place Left To Leave is the perfect testament to returning to the roots of what makes Brent Cobb, the successful singer-songwriter that he is.

I was born into it. Professionally, I’ve been making a living at it for over a decade and any breaks I’ve had along the way have been because of the songs I’ve written.”
